Health Insurance & Cord Blood Banking
For most insurance plans, cord blood banking is not a covered service. However, FamilyCord offers special discounts to members of our insurance partners.
Families with a history of leukemia or lymphatic conditions may be eligible for insurance to cover some portion of the cord blood banking expense. The following CPT codes and ICD-9 definitions may be useful for insurance reimbursement for umbilical cord blood collection.
Note: Insurance submission for cord blood reimbursement cannot be submitted with billing for maternity care and/or delivery.
CPT Code | ICD-9 Code | Description |
---|---|---|
59899 | V59.02 Stem cell donor | Unlisted procedure, maternity care and delivery |
If applicable, | V16.6 Family History Leukemia | |
and/or | V10.60 Leukemia, unspecified (for persons with potential health hazards related to family history of leukemia) | |
38999 | V59.02 Stem cell donor | Unlisted procedure, hemic or lymphatic system |
If applicable, | V16.6 Family History Leukemia | |
and/or | V10.60 Leukemia, unspecified (for persons with potential health hazards related to family history of leukemia) |
That being said, the codes listed above represent possible coding options and are neither exhaustive nor appropriate in all cases. FamilyCord does not assume responsibility for determining appropriate CPT code(s) for insurance billing. Contact your healthcare provider to discuss if these CPT codes are appropriate for your medical condition. Submit the claim to the health insurance.
